Research has found out a lot about how acupuncture does work, but there is still much that is not understood.
Following is my version of how acupuncture works. But as research advances there will be references to nano physiology, bio-physics and other little understood mechanisms of biology.
Acupuncture has been field tested and refined for over 2,500 years. It is a powerful healing system by itself and as an adjunct to modern medicine. Acupuncture produces rapid results and is very cost effective. It is an extremely conservative approach to health care because it introduces no external substances into the patient, is safe, and it supports the natural healing process.
Acupuncture stimulation has a local effect of increased blood circulation, lymph circulation, immune system response, neuro-peptide release and peripheral nerve stimulation. The distal effect appears in the brain as multiple neuro-transmitter releases, increased blood circulation and endocrine secretions. It continues out from the brain via the nervous and endocrine systems to all organs, tissues and systems involved in the disease and healing process.
The intent of acupuncture stimulation is to accelerate the body’s ability to heal itself. Acupuncture has a “pro-biotic,” anti-inflammatory, analgesic and homeostatic effect. It treats the skin, muscles, joints, ligaments and connective tissues; the cardiovascular, nervous, respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems. Because acupuncture makes the body work more efficiently, it usually causes positive side effects. A rare side
effect is occasional aggravation of existing symptoms during the first few treatments.
Acupuncture works well with all other forms of health care including massage, chiropractic, physical therapy, allergy shots, other alternative modalities, chemotherapy and surgery. Acupuncture can be used for preventative medicine by keeping patients in a state of wellness.
Modern acupuncture is pain free and well tolerated by all types of patients from pediatric to geriatric. The most common treatment experience is that of deep relaxation coupled with a feeling of increased energy.
Oftentimes patients in pain will feel some immediate relief.
